How to Choose the Right Color for Your Pavers and Walls

With all the paver and wall colors available, it can be confusing to know which to choose for your outdoor project. While it’s important to have a harmonized palette, color selection also has to do with the intended use of your pavers. Let’s look at the dos and don’ts of choosing colors for your pavers and walls.

Don’t use the exact color as your home

It’s natural to want to match the color of your home, but an exact match is not necessarily ideal. Choosing the same color will create a monotone look. Instead, try to stay within the color “tone”.

If the siding, brick, stucco or wood is a warm brown, look for pavers within that color family. Likewise, if your home is a cool grey, look for grey tones. However, if you have a red brick home, don’t feel you need to choose a brick-colored (or brick-sized) paver. Grey-toned pavers are also a great choice to complement red brick.

Do consider what your pavers will be used for

Different colors are suited for different applications. For example, lighter colors are better for pool decks because they absorb less heat from the sun and are more comfortable for bare feet. In contrast, a darker color may be better for a high traffic driveway or outdoor kitchen area that is prone to stains and spills.

Don’t feel you have to match pavers and walls

While it is possible to match the color of pavers and walls, sometimes a contrast is nice too. If you have a large patio or pool deck, choosing shades for pavers and walls that are in the same tone or color family will help to frame the area beautifully.

Do use color to harmonize your setting

Try to create a harmonized setting by matching surrounding elements like the window and roofline trim of your home, and even a rocky outcropping or a stand of trees. You can also use color to define different areas of your project, to direct people from one area to another or to identify the edges of pools and steps. And don’t forget about pillars, planters and landscape walls to coordinate or contrast with the surroundings.

Don’t be afraid to use contrasting colors

If you have a large area, one color may be too much of the same shade. Add a border, accent or inlay in your design with a contrasting color or two to create interesting appeal. Use the same accent in your walls, pillars or planters to create a cohesive look though-out.

Do check the color in natural light

The best way to know for sure is to test a colored paver in natural light. Visit one of our Outdoor Idea Centers and pick up FREE product samples to visualize how the color will look next to your home and existing landscape.
